This was suppose to go out yesterday. It didn’t. Nothing dramatic happened, unless you count the sudden blizzard that disrupted the entire community. Honestly, I could have sent this out, but I simply forgot. I got out of my routine and by the time I remembered, it was too late to get it out on time.

I thought about skipping this week altogether. Start a new streak next Monday. Nice and clean, and it takes me off the hook this week.

But that’s usually how things fall apart.

And I’ve done this more times than I can count. Miss one run and suddenly my whole training plan feels shaky. Skip a small habit and it starts to feel like you’re back at the beginning. It’s strange how quickly our brain jumps to those conclusions. Like everything resets overnight because of one missed day.

But that’s not how it really works.

My legs don’t forget how to run or I don’t immediately lose fitness because I miss a Tuesday. A habit doesn’t disappear because I skipped a day. What disappears is the streak. And we tend to treat those two things like they’re the same.

They’re not.

A streak is just a scoreboard. The habit is the value. And the value sticks around a lot longer than we give it credit for.

Most things don’t fall apart because we miss once. They fall apart when we decide that missing once means we’re done. We turn one small gap into a full stop. And in reality, it feels easier and cleaner to restart later than to continue imperfectly today.

But continuing today is the whole thing!

So if something slipped this week, here’s a simple way to get back on track. Don’t try to make up for it. Don’t double up. Don’t wait for Monday. Just do the smallest version of it today. Lower the bad until it feels almost too easy. Make it impossible to fail, and then show up.

Then do it again tomorrow.

No catching up. No overthinking. Just don’t miss two days in a row. Otherwise, you’re forming a new habit that probably isn’t as valuable for you.

Remember, missing once doesn’t break anything. Quitting does. Most of the time, quitting doesn’t look like quitting. It looks like waiting for a better time.

This is me not waiting.

Yours in Simplicity,

Jimmy
