Over the course of my life, I developed a habit that caused me more problems than I realized.

I reacted.

An email would arrive and I would fire back a response.

Someone would say something that bothered me and I would immediately defend myself.

A problem would show up and I would rush to solve it before I fully understood it.

It felt productive.  It felt decisive.  It felt like I was taking action.

Most of the time, I was just making things worse.

Somewhere along the way, I learned a simple lesson.

Pause.

Not forever.  Not for days.

Just long enough to create a little space between what happens and what happens next.

That space is where better decisions live.

A pause lets emotions settle before they take the steering wheel.

A pause gives us time to ask a better question.

A pause helps us respond instead of react.

I still catch myself wanting to respond immediately.  Sometimes I write the email and save it as a draft.  Sometimes I take a short walk.  Sometimes I simply count to ten.

The funny thing is that most situations are not as urgent as they first appear.

The email can wait.

The disagreement can wait.

The decision can wait.

What usually cannot wait is the damage caused by reacting too quickly.

The world rewards speed.  It celebrates instant answers and immediate action.

But some of the best choices in life come from slowing down for a moment.

A pause is not weakness.

A pause is wisdom.

This week, try creating a little more space before your next response.

Before you send the email, pause.

Before you answer the question, pause.

Before you make the purchase, pause.

You may discover that the right response was waiting on the other side of a few extra seconds.

There is more power in a pause than most people realize.

Yours in Simplicity,

Jimmy
